Erin Hulme
Business Director at Greenberg Traurig, LLP
MBA@Rice, '23
What is your current role?
I am the business director in an international law firm.
Where are you located?
Houston, Texas
What prompted your decision to pursue an MBA, and why did you choose Rice Business?
The MBA represented both a challenge and an opportunity to pursue elevated professional roles. I wanted to challenge myself and my abilities. For me, growth comes in the form of continuous change. Professionally, I have a goal to obtain a chief operating officer position. I knew I would need an MBA to achieve such a position. I enjoy the challenge of combining human and physical resources to create an efficient operation.
Could you share a pivotal moment or experience during your MBA journey that significantly made an impact?
The most impactful moments were the in-person experiences, particularly the first Intensive Learning Environment (ILE). Weekly live classes allow students to form relationships and build entry-level trust. There is nothing quite like sharing a meal, laughing, and building a bond in person.
The most pivotal moment of the program is completing your first year and Global Field Experience (GFE). The sense of achievement students feel is amazing. This, coupled with the ability to put those classes to practical use in a global business environment, is a truly unique experience.
What were the most valuable skills or knowledge you gained at Rice Business, and how have they contributed to your professional growth?
I now consistently use the term “re-framing” in coaching conversations with my staff as a means of alternative approaches to contentious situations. Also, the finance course allowed me to strengthen and sharpen my ability to interpret operational financial data and increase the accuracy of my forecasts.
How did the faculty and resources at Rice Business support your academic and career development?
For such a prestigious school, the faculty and staff made it feel like a small community. Everyone from department heads to the deans opened their doors to conversation and asked how they could serve.
There was never a moment when I felt I could not ask for assistance or guidance. I encourage all students to take advantage of the various wrap-around services available, including tutoring, the career development office, and the Office of Academic Programs and Student Experience (APSE).
Being a member of the Rice Business Student Association (RBSA) provided amazing insight into all the resources available to our students. As a member of the board, I made it my mission to advocate for these services.
What role has the Rice Business network and community played in your MBA experience, and what advice do you have for leveraging these connections?
The Rice Business network is the core experience. I was amazed at the breadth of experience, industry, and seniority within our student body. This provides a rich learning environment of varying perspectives. Students form smaller groups within the cohort and help one another professionally and personally. I know a few students who now work together because of the Rice network.
What advice would you give to prospective students considering an MBA at Rice Business?
First, without scaring anyone too much, before accepting your admission have an honest conversation with yourself and your family. The time commitment required to fully engage with the program is significant.
Second, “find your people,” in the program — the people who are in the trenches with you and will provide support. You are going to need it.
Finally, participate and attend in-person and virtual events. Yes, you are here to obtain an MBA; however, business school is also about networking and the ability to navigate varying perspectives. There is a wealth of resources at your fingertips and a vast network to explore.
How has obtaining a Rice MBA impacted your short-term and long-term career goals?
Obtaining my MBA from Rice has affected both my short-term and long-term career goals. When I would speak to colleagues or supervisors and inform them, that I was obtaining my MBA, the response was “Oh that’s good, what school are you attending?” And when I informed them I was attending Rice, the responses changed to “Wow, that’s incredible — what a great school.” The immediate increase in my influence was astounding. From there, I was more often called on to mentor others, provide strategic vision, and share advice on financial analysis and budgeting.
From a long-term perspective, I am more confident in my abilities and what I bring to the table. And I receive more inquiries from recruiters on open leadership positions.
What special programs, initiatives or opportunities at Rice Business should prospective students be aware of?
First, the Global Field Experience (GFE) is outstanding. The ability to put our understanding of global business knowledge to work in a foreign country with a local organization is invaluable.
Second, the Leader as a Coach course was extremely helpful and insightful. Whether students are new to their role or are tenured leaders, the course provides perspective on empowering diverse individuals within all levels of the organization.
Finally, the student association is your advocate during the degree experience. They provide an anchor and advocacy for students to the school, whether you are local or live beyond the borders of Houston. I encourage all students to participate in the various events or reach out to a board member and share your thoughts.
