G. Anthony Gorry (1941-2018)
Former Friedkin Professor Emeritus of Management

G. Anthony Gorry is the former Friedkin Professor Emeritus of Management at Rice University. Prior to his retirement, he was also a Professor of Computer Science and the Director of the Center for Technology in Teaching and Learning at Rice. He was an Adjunct Professor of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine and a director of the W. M. Keck Center for Interdisciplinary Bioscience Training, a collaborative program of six institutions in the Greater Houston area. He previously served as Vice President of Rice University, Vice President of Baylor College of Medicine and a faculty member in management and computer science at M.I.T. He consulted extensively with corporations and institutions and was involved in the development of several businesses. He published and lectured widely on the effects of information technology on society. Now he writes essays and memoir. Dr. Gorry is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics.

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of Tony Gorry, on Sunday, October 28, 2018, after a long battle with cancer. A member of the National Academy of Medicine, Tony was a beloved teacher and mentor, prolific writer and nationally recognized scholar in management, medicine and computer science.
Officially, he was the Friedkin Professor of Management at Rice Business, professor of computer science in the George R. Brown School of Engineering, director of Rice's Center for Technology in Teaching and Learning, founding director of the W. M. Keck Center for Computational Biology, a former vice president for information technology at both Rice and Baylor College of Medicine and a member of the Baylor neuroscience faculty for more than 40 years. Tony joined Rice University in 1975 and joined the Jones School faculty in 2000.
To us, he was a bright light, a devoted writer of poetry and memoir, a friend. Our deepest condolences go out to his family.
