Tarik Umar is the Verne F. Simons Distinguished Assistant Professor of Finance. He holds a degree in economics from Harvard University and a PhD in finance from the University of Chicago. Tarik teaches introductory finance to Executive MBA and Weekend Professional MBA students and has received multiple awards for teaching excellence. He has also earned accolades for his research in financial regulation, investor behavior, and market dynamics. His work has been published in top-tier journals, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Management Science, Review of Finance, and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. Notably, his research on investment-adviser regulation explores the impact of regulatory jurisdiction on adviser misconduct, shedding light on the complexities of financial oversight. His studies also investigate investor behavior, such as complexity aversion in investment decisions, and the role of hedge funds in acquiring public information. Before joining Rice University, he worked in mergers and acquisitions at Peter J. Solomon & Co. and Citigroup in New York.
